Stainless Steel Plate 303 ASTM A895
303 Stainless Steel Plate Overview
303 stainless steel plate represents the optimum in machinability among the austenitic stainless steels. The sulfur addition to 303 stainless steel plate is responsible for the improved machining and galling characteristics. However, the addition of sulfur to 303 stainless steel plate lowers its corrosion resistance compared to grade 304 and 304L stainless steel plate. While the sulfur improves machining, it also causes a decrease of the toughness. However, the toughness is still excellent as with other austenitic grades of stainless steel plate.
At Penn Stainless products, 303 stainless steel plate is typically sold in thicknesses ranging from 0.25” to 3.5”. Other thicknesses are also available upon request. 303 stainless steel plate is available in a variety of widths and lengths.
Chemical Composition of 303 Stainless Steel Plate
The chemical composition of grade 303 stainless steel plate is unique. To begin, 303 stainless steel plate contains up to 0.15% carbon, 2.00% manganese and 1.00% silicon. 303 stainless steel also has a maximum of 0.20% phosphorous. This type of metal includes higher levels of sulfur—it contains at least 0.15% sulfur. 303 stainless steel plate also contains between 17.00% and 19.00% chromium and between 8.00% and 10.00% nickel.
Mechanical Properties of 303 Stainless Steel Plates
303 stainless steel plate has a minimum tensile strength of 75 ksi and a yield strength at 0.2% of 30 ksi. 303 stainless steel plate also has a minimum elongation of 35% in 55mm. On the Brinell hardness scale 303 stainless steel plate has a hardness of 228.
Physical Properties of 303 Stainless Steel Plate
The density of 303 stainless steel plate is 0.29 lbm/In^3 at 68℉.The coefficient of thermal expansion of 303 stainless steel plate between 68℉ and 212℉ is 9.2 (min/in). Between 68℉ and 932℉ the coefficient of thermal expansion is 10.9 (min/in). The coefficient of thermal expansion of 303 stainless steel plate between 68℉ and 1,450℉ is 10.9 (min/in). Another important property of 303 stainless steel plate is its electrical resistivity. At 68℉ the electrical resistivity is 28.3 mW-in, at 212℉ it is 30.7 mW-in, at 392℉ it is 33.8 mW-in. The electrical resistivity of 303 stainless steel plate at 752℉ is 39.4 mW-in, at 1,112℉ it is 43.7 mW-in and a 1,472℉ the electrical resistivity is 47.6 m-in. The thermal conductivity of 303 stainless steel plate between 68℉ and 212℉ is 113.2 BTU/hr-ft. The melting point of 303 stainless steel plate is 2,552℉.

303 Stainless Steel Plate Applications and Usage
Because of 303 stainless steel plate’s unique qualities, this type of stainless steel plate has some important applications. 303 stainless steel plate has a high level of sulfur, it does not stand up to corrosion as well. However, this material has a high machineability, making it ideal in the production of nuts, bolts, valves, fittings, bushings, and shafts. 303 stainless steel plate also has applications in aircraft fittings, electrical switch gear components and gears. 303 stainless steel plate also is used in some medical instruments, especially tools that require intricate parts that can only be made by machining. There are also applications for 303 stainless steel plate in the food production industry. 303 stainless steel is not ideal however, for use in environments with high levels of corrosive elements. The addition of the sulfur gives 303 stainless steel high machinability, but it sacrifices resistance to corrosive mediums.
